Dashboard lights use colors to indicate urgency: red means immediate action is needed, yellow or orange means a service or mechanical inspection is required soon, and green or blue indicates a system is active.
Red lights often signal serious issues like brake or engine problems, while yellow lights could indicate a light is out or low tyre pressure. Green and blue lights are generally for informational purposes, such as showing that your high-beams are on.
Here’s how to decipher your dashboard lights:
Red lights: Immediate action required
Engine overheating: Looks like a sailboat in wavy water. Pull over and let the engine cool down to prevent damage.
Brake system: An exclamation mark in a circle can mean low brake fluid, worn pads, or a serious system failure. It could also mean the park brake is engaged. Pull over safely, immediately.
Low oil pressure: Resembles an oil can. This is a critical warning. Check the oil level, but if it’s full, do not drive the car. Serious engine damage can occur if you continue driving.
Charging system: A battery symbol with a plus and minus sign. This indicates a problem with the alternator or battery. You should have the system checked asap.
Yellow or orange lights: Service soon
Check engine: This light can have many causes, from a simple issue to a more serious engine or emissions system issue.
Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS): Looks like a flat tyre with an exclamation mark inside. It means one or more tyres are low on pressure and need air.
Diesel particulate filter: A symbol indicating a blockage in the filter, common in diesel cars.
Green or blue lights: Informational
These lights are not warnings and simply show that a system is on.
Examples include your high-beam headlights, turn signals and cruise control.
Other important lights
Seat belt reminder: A red person with a seat belt across them reminds you and your passengers to buckle up.
Airbag (SRS): If this stays on, there is a problem with the supplemental restraint system and airbags may not deploy. Get this checked asap.
ABS: If this light is on, there is an issue with your anti-lock braking system. Again, get this checked.
Important tip
Always consult your owner’s manual for the most accurate information on what your specific car’s lights mean, as symbols can vary between makes and models.
